Salute to our ancestors


 Bhogi is a festival celebrated in different states of India. It symbolises getting rid of old and negative things from our life and renew ourselves both physically and mentally.  But sadly, we have also  discarded a lot of our cultural heritage and traditional knowledge. Today, as I  read about the kheeladi site near Madurai where 2600 year old  pottery shreds have been discovered to have nano technology footprint, I have no words  to express the admiration I hold for our ancestors. Graphene is considered the world's thinnest strongest and the most conductive material for both electricity and heat. As the modern man is gloating over his  latest hi-tech  invention, it is mind boggling to realise that our ancestors have used carbon nano tubes  in their humble  pottery. Pongal is a festival to celebrate this spirit of living with nature. There is so much to learn from our ancient  civilizations. And I am glad that covid has helped me take this journey. Slowly yet steadily I seek to unlearn and relearn , seeking the blessings of my ancestors.

  For me, writing is healing. I now embark on this journey of penning down a recent incident in my life that is a life lesson for me in many ways. My intention to publish it in my blog is that it could help someone in need. My fiftieth birthday brought me many pleasant unforgettable surprises from my family,friends and colleagues. Can't be more grateful. On March 11, 2022, an unpleasant surprise came with a slip and fall. With a "pop" in my knee I fell down. An MRI revealed that ACL ( anterior cruciate ligament) of my  left knee was completely torn ( along with meniscus tear etc). Instinctively I reached for my mobile to ask Google guru. ACL SURGERY AT 50 ... MY JOURNEY FROM FALL TO FITNESS ...

This article could help someone ,especially in their fifties ( like me) with basic fitness  to give hope that " If I can do it , you too can ". My pre-op fitness regime was yoga and pranayama which helped with my flexibility and mental agility. But my muscle strength is very average, which is the case with most non-sporty people over the age of forty. I chose to get my surgery done at  chennai  Sri Ramachandra sports centre for two reasons. One is, the chief surgeon, Dr Arumugam is my husband's friend and  very experienced in arthroscopic surgery. Other reason is, psychologically, I felt I was going to a wellness centre and not an illness center ( hospital ). To see sports people getting back to their form is  a great motivation for me. Faith energises .. faith heals

  Faith energises.... faith heals.... My memory goes back 10 years ago when we had shifted to our newly built home in the outskirts of thindal, Erode. Surrounded by lush green paddy fields , the first few years was a " kerala" experience! Close to our home, the  " karuparayan and kannimaar" temple particularly intrigued me . The huge tamarind trees and neem tree would easily be over 100 years old and I have enjoyed the bird chatter standing outside the locked gate. I would ask the passersby " WHY" it is kept locked . And each had a story to share ! Finally after 33 years , the " kumbabisegam " was held today.  The insensitive blasting of loud music and the bursting of crackers ( my heart was bleeding for all those birds whose home this tree has been, for many years ) infuriated me and my rational mind fired up to" question" this faith . But then, I pacified myself telling " thank God, the traditional faith " is still there
